write a new poem for today
it is march 27th, two thousand and nineteen

write a new poem
because the rest of mine are
missing or
boring. not quite right

write a new poem
because the old words don’t work anymore
none of the nouns do

write a new poem because
you used to have such a good sense
   of time
it made perfect sense to you
and now
it’s moments evaporating
never breathing

write a new poem
because love is greater than fear
good is greater than evil
you are not alone

write a new poem
because poems are lovely
and just the right form

write a new poem because
you are alone

fear creeps around corners
love strides on by
fear doesn’t take any chances
love is floating on air

you looked twice and said
        what does it take to write a poem?
        how long does it take?

you go through the greats
        none of whom you’ve read
you remember being a child with a diary

write a new poem
but it’s about all the same things
all the same words turned over

beneath each
like an individual stone
an egg
is love
        its true meaning
in every form
the most beautiful
